URBAN, MIND AND SPORTS
Krasnodar preparing for World Cup of FIFA 2018, the stadium will be a magnet for public interaction with its surroundings; landscaped space motivates pedestrian routes through the green site, enriched with shops, cafes and leisure activity zones. Before getting into the stadium, as a part of it, the precinct is designed as a dynamic “fan zone” where spectators gather before and after the games. Besides being a stimulating and enjoyable place to visit for football fans, the ring around the stadium is designed as a public park that serves the neighborhood in non-match days, as well. The form of the stadium resembles the Mobius Band; constructed on a 44,6 hectares site, the plan is a square with curved corners, nested in the landscaped public setting. The stadium is conceived as a three tiered solution for 50,633 seats, with 72 separate portals around the stadium. Wind animated exterior façade, composed of thousands of aluminum panels, move with the air motion. Inspired by artist Ned Khan’s design, the facade consists of a vertical veil of rotating vertical fins that wraps around the stadium spanning between the two perimeter steel structural sections. The currents reveal the ever changing patterns with glitters on the surface. As the panels sway free, without touching each other, they do not generate a noise, yet a continuously engaging flow creates a meditative and aesthetic vision.
