RESPECTING THE TRACES
Dubrovnik is the most popular tourist destination in Croatia, by the Adriatic shore. The original hotel building, destructed during the war and weather beaten, has been left abandoned for the last 14 years. A complete renovation, keeping only the carcass of the structure, has been the architectural approach. At the sea level, the application of the new landscape to the site engenders new functions, a spa unit being one of them. Extra room and bed capacity earned via new floors added at the top of the previous middle block. Having 315 rooms and 625 bed capacity, the hotel also houses three restaurants, a spa and health center, entertainment areas, meeting and conference halls. During the rehabilitation process, architectural design and façade preferences are evaluated together with the landscape; to establish a direct communication with the historic setting and the sea, transparent glass is preferred on the front and back façades. Respecting the traditional construction of the region, it is also anticipated taking the fullest advantage of the current industrial and technological developments in terms of structure and material use.
