NON-INTERVENTIONIST APPROACH
A competition called for proposals for the Middle East Technical University Student Center which is to be designed in accordance with the METU Square. The main idea of project has been to carry on a non-interventionist approach as the land has been already in use by METU students for long years, roots’ back in revolutionary student movements. Although the program of the student clubs’ offices and performance areas is fulfilled, integrity of indoor-outdoor spaces is promoted whilst existing routes and rhythms of the land is reproduced and enriched. Maintaining the organic relations, open to probabilities and possibilities, freedom of space and people has been credited by means of the architectural punctuation. The main sheltered platform is provided beneath a vast metal roof balancing the elevation difference of the site. The transparent retractable walls offered to be used closed or open depending on the need or choice of the students. The amphitheatre form naturally passes through the building with reference to the existing topography. In the same manner, the architectural lighting of the zone is also preferred to be flexible and portable, with an efficient infrastructure provided. Respecting the harmonization with the man made environment, the building also aimed to be nature and student friendly.
